Change may be on the horizon for Robert E. Lee Elementary school in Satsuma. As was first reported in The Call News, Satsuma is considering changing the Lee Elementary school name. The new name being considered shouldn’t come as a surprise: Satsuma Elementary.
Although the decision to change at this moment is likely influenced by a wave of backlash against Confederate glorification, Satsuma has long been eyeing a name change to REL. The city’s school system sent out a survey in 2017 inquiring about possible new names.
In a comment on Facebook, school board member Matt Dial laid out what could be the new naming system. K4 and K5 would be the Satsuma Early Learning Center, 1st grade through 6th grade would be Satsuma Elementary, and 7th and 8th grades would be the Satsuma Junior High Academy. Satsuma High School would remain the same.
The idea drew mixed reactions on social media. Some expressed outrage at the idea of changing a name they grew up with. However, some thought the change was overdue. The news inspired a lively debate on Facebook.
The next school board meeting will be Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
The Changing Times
While tradition is important, the times are changing. As public opinion shifts, it would not be advantageous for the city of Satsuma to have an elementary school named after a Confederate general. In today’s climate, such a name could detract businesses from coming to the city, and even consumers.
Mississippi recently faced such a battle over its state flag. The state ultimately voted to change their flag after a lot of backlash. Even the NCAA was threatening to not hold postseason events in the state.
Satsuma has built a tremendous school system. According to Public School Review, Satsuma schools rank in the top 20% of the state. The community has taken great pride in its school system.
Changing the name of the school will not affect the quality of education provided. The name change will help the city avoid negative attention, which is something a school system of this quality does not need.
