McIntosh’s own Brok Weaver has landed a contract with the world’s biggest mixed martial arts promotion. Weaver was awarded a contract with the UFC after winning a fight on Tuesday night in Las Vegas. A parade was held Saturday in McIntosh to celebrate his achievement.
Weaver won the fight on UFC president Dana White’s Contender Series, a promotion designed to scout talent for the UFC. He competes in the Welterweight division which contains fighters weighing approximately 170 pounds. Weaver defeated Devin Smyth by unanimous decision with scores of 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28.
Weaver is a member of the MOWA Chocktaw tribe in Washington County. The MOWA, which is short of Mobile and Washington counties, is comprised of Native Americans who were not forced to move West by the Federal government in the 1830s. The tribe was recognized by the state of Alabama in 1979, and boasts a population of around 3,000.
