Voters gathered in Iowa yesterday to begin the selection of the next Democratic candidate for president. The first in the nation caucus ran into some issues, and a winner has yet to be announced. The Iowa Democratic Party cited “irregularities” in delaying an announcement.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has emerged as the favorite in recent weeks. The Senator has been climbing in polls across the country and was leading several Iowa polls going into the caucus. Mayor Pete Buttigieg was expected to come in second.
The race for the Democratic nomination has narrowed from nearly two dozen candidates to a mere handful. Senator Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden are considered the favorites nationally. Senator Elizabeth Warren and Mayor Buttigieg are next in line, with former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg coming on strong to join the top 5.
Results from Iowa are expected later today. The next primary will occur next week in New Hampshire.
