Tropical Storm Dorian intensified to hurricane strength on Wednesday as it passed by the island of Puerto Rico. As of 11:00 PM last night, the storm was located 90 miles north of Puerto Rico, packing 85 mph winds and moving northwest at 13 mph. Forecasts show the storm striking Florida over the Labor Day weekend.

Now that the storm has left the Caribbean Sea, meteorologists expect its strength to pick up. The forecast calls for the storm to be a major hurricane when it makes landfall on the east coast with at least 115 mph. It is unknown at this time if the storm will enter the Gulf of Mexico.

Residents of Florida’s east coast should begin taking safety measures now. Residents of the Gulf Coast should continue to keep an eye on the storm, but also start planning for a potential impact.
