Trump Returning to Mobile?

Multiple news outlets are reporting that President Trump is returning to Mobile next month. The purpose of the trip is to campaign for Alabama Senate candidate Tommy Turberville. The former Auburn football coach is in a runoff with former Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions. The election is set for July 14th.

A Fractured Relationship

The Alabama Republican primary might be the one President Trump is most interested in. Jeff Sessions served as Trump’s first Attorney General. He was also the first senator to endorse him. The two had a bitter parting after Sessions recused himself from the Special Counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

President Trump strongly disagreed with Sessions recusing himself from the investigation. The president believed the investigation to be a witch hunt, and that Sessions should have protected him via oversight. He has continually blasted Sessions in the media since his departure from the administration.

Sessions maintains that he had no choice but to recuse himself. Despite the president’s strong words against him, Sessions has still played up his ties to the Trump administration. Fear of angering the president’s supporters has limited his options in fighting back.

City officials say they have not been contacted by the Trump campaign as of yet. If the event occurs, it would be at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. This would be the same spot that then candidate Trump visited in 2015. In a twist of irony, Sessions was on stage for that rally.

A Trump rally in Mobile would be a bitter blow for Jeff Sessions. It would occur just days before the primary, giving a big boost to the Turberville campaign. The president enjoys strong support in Alabama and his endorsement is likely to carry some weight.

What do you think of President Trump returning to Mobile? Will you be attending the rally if he does? Give us your thoughts or let us know in the comments!
