Mobile County has set a new high for Covid-19 cases. Mobile County broke its Covid-19 record on Thursday with 203 new cases. The previous high was only 112. The county has accumulated 4,418 cases so far, and 137 deaths.
Alabama as a whole had 1,334 new cases according to Worldometers. The site also reports that 36 people died due to the virus across the state. Alabama remains one of the nation’s hotspots for the coronavirus.
The surge in cases across the country continues as well. The past few days have seen the US add 60,000 cases per day. Additionally, deaths are starting to accelerate once again. The US has had three straight days of over 800 deaths caused by the virus.
The Coming Weeks
The surge could continue for weeks. The Mobile County Covid-19 record could be broke again. The 4th of July weekend has long concerned health experts. One didn’t have to look far on social media to see evidence of many large gatherings that went against health guidelines.
Another event is on the horizon that could heavily contribute to the spread of the disease, and that is the reopening of public schools. Fortunately, Alabama has developed a remote learning program that most local school districts have adopted. Parents will have the choice of keeping their children within the safety of their homes if they choose.
Some states have already begun rolling back their reopening plans. The key figure to watch going forward is the hospitalization rate. Public pressure will grown on mayors and governors as hospitals fill up. Health experts warned that this was a possibility when many states moved to exit the quarantine too early.
People should continue to maintain social distancing. They are also encouraged to wear a mask. Though it is not 100% effective, scientific studies have shown they do help reduce the spread of the virus. Washing your hands is also very important.
