The world’s largest Mardi Gras tree was lit up last night in downtown Mobile. Mayor Sandy Stimpson hosted the inaugural lighting of the tree, kicking off the 2020 Mardi Gras season. The first parade rolls tonight at 6:30 PM.
A good-sized crowd showed up for the tree lighting. Mayor Stimpson read a proclamation allowing other cities to celebrate the holiday, particularly New Orleans. The two cities have a long-standing rivalry on who was the first to celebrate Mardi Gras.
Mayor Stimpson also promised the tree would have even more decorations next year.
The Conde Cavaliers will kick off Mobile’s Mardi Gras season tonight. The Pharoahs roll out tomorrow night. On Saturday, February 22nd, Saraland and Prichard will have their annual Mardi Gras parades. For a complete 2020 Mardi Gras schedule, see below.
