Jeff Sessions is in a strong position to get his old job back. According to a poll done by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, Sessions leads the Republican Primary with 31% of the vote. Former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville is close behind at 29%. Congressman Bradley Byrne came in fourth in the poll at 17%.
Sessions held a Senate seat from Alabama for years before President Trump chose him to be his Attorney General. The two had a falling out over Sessions recusing himself from the Mueller investigation. He resigned from the position in November of 2018.
The winner of the primary will face incumbent Democratic Senator Doug Jones. Jones was already considered the most vulnerable Senator up for reelection, but his chances sunk even further when he voted to convict President Trump in his impeachment trial. The president enjoys great support from the state of Alabama.
The Republican Primary will be held March 3rd. If none of the candidates reach 50%, a runoff election will be held between the top two vote-getters.
