For the first time since 1916, Alabama hunters will be able to take aim at the Sandhill Crane. Alabama becomes the third state east of the Mississippi to allow the birds to be hunted. This is the first new species Alabama has opened up to hunting since 2006 when a limited season on alligators was added.

Sandhill Crane

In order to hunt the Sandhill Crane, a permit will be required. The state will be issuing 400 permits to be used over two hunting seasons. Each permit will allow the killing of 3 birds. Registration for permits begins in September.

Those who are drawn to get permits will have to pass an online test that covers species identification. They must also purchase a federal duck stamp and a Harvest Information Program license. The first Sandhill Crane hunting season will begin on December 3rd of 2019 and run through January 5th of 2020. The second season begins on January 16th and runs through January 31st.
