By now I’m sure you’ve heard all of the hooplas around the new Popeyes chicken sandwich. While a new item on a fast food joint’s menu typically doesn’t draw much attention, Popeyes was able to “go viral” by challenging Chick-fil-a’s signature dish. The two engaged in a back-and-forth on Twitter, and the rest is history.
The campaign has been so successful that the chicken joint is literally running out of chicken. Most of the reviews I have come across have been positive, so thus far the sandwich is living up to the hype.
I was able to sample a Popeyes chicken sandwich before the craze went into full effect and lines were a mile long. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The chicken was juicy, and the breading was flavorful. The bread was good, but nothing spectacular. The pickles added a good crunch and a nice acidic bite.
The sandwich went viral by challenging Chick-fil-a’s status as the best fast-food chicken sandwich. Has Popeyes taken the top spot? For now, I would have to say no. I would say the two were comparable in quality, but we’ll have to see if Popeyes can keep up the quality over a period of time before it truly challenges Chick-fil-a, which has maintained their high quality for years.
While I don’t think Popeyes has surpassed Chick-fil-a yet, I do highly recommend the new chicken sandwich. The setup of the two is similar, but Popeyes has its own unique flavor. Chicken lovers have a new option to satiate their hunger.
