President Trump gave the State of the Union address to the nation in front of both houses of Congress last night. The president touted a growing economy and strengthened southern border, as well as boosted defense spending. President Trump did not mention the impeachment trial against him that is currently nearing its completion.

In a clear shot at several Democratic presidential contenders, President Trump promised not to let socialism destroy American healthcare. Candidates such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are promoting a Medicare for All healthcare system which would increase taxes, but promise health coverage for all Americans.

The speech could easily be seen as a reelection pitch for November. Despite a strong economy, the president is expected to face a tough test this fall. Scandals have plagued his administration, and he is currently fighting an impeachment trial in the Senate, though he is expected to be acquitted later today.

The event was not without controversy. President Trump refused to shake hands with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi when he arrived. Pelosi responded by ripping up the written copy of his speech as he finished delivering it. These actions garnered more coverage than the speech itself across the national media.
