Two big changes are coming for Alabama drivers this Sunday. Motorists will be paying 6 more cents per gallon at the pump as a result of the gas tax increase passed by the legislature. On top of that, police will be cracking down on drivers who drive too slow in the left lane on the interstate via the Anti-Road Rage Act.
Alabama has one of the lowest gas tax rates in the nation, with only 9 other states having lower rates. Sunday’s increase is just the first step, as another 2 cent increase will occur in 2020 and 2021. Starting in 2023, the gas tax can rise automatically based on the National Highway Construction Cost Index. Those increases could be up to a penny a year.
While drivers are not likely to be happy about the gas tax increase, cracking down on slow drivers in the left lane will bring a smile to some faces. The left lane on interstates is designed for passing. There are already laws on the books designed to prevent left lane campers, the Anti-Road Rage Act simply strengthens these laws.
