A Saraland family had a close encounter with a black bear yesterday. According to Fox 10 News, the bear sniffed around the family’s back porch looking for food. No one was hurt in the encounter, but Elizabeth Mahan was able to get a video of the incident.

There was another sighting in Saraland about a week ago. That bear was spotted less than a mile away.

Bear sightings are fairly common in Saraland, as home development has encroached upon their territory. There have been no reports of bear attacks in recent years. The bears are typically looking for food, and remain wary of humans. However, caution should be exercised in any bear encounters, as they remain dangerous.

In order to prevent any unwanted attention from black bears, make sure your trash cans are tightly sealed. Keep any pet food that is stored outside tightly sealed as well. The smell of food is what is most likely to attract animals.
